Firefighters Battle Lithium-Ion Fires

Lithium-ion batteries, also known as LI-ION batteries that can charge e-Bikes and electric scooters, have been the cause of many fires lately in and around New York City. City-owned residential apartments are being converted into localized charging depots raising concerns about these batteries being charged in residential buildings. “These batteries, when they’re damaged or overcharged, release hydrogen gas, explode violently,” FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

In Oct., after Fire Marshals determined that four fires in one week were caused by e-bike batteries, officials issued a warning to e-bike users, encouraging them to be careful when charging and storing the batteries. In 2021 alone, New York City had 93 fires, more than 70 injuries and at least four deaths caused by lithium-ion battery fires.

The most recent fire happening today in the Bronx, the worst in 30 years. HAZMAT was called for lithium ion batteries burning, however it is still unclear if it was the cause or contributed to the fire.

Around 200 FDNY members responded to the five-alarm blaze, including Engine 46, Ladder 27 which responded from their location on the Cross Bronx Expressway. Many rescues from all of the floors were made in the 19-story building. Sadly, many lost their lives in this tragic fire, where some of the firefighters ran out of oxygen in their tanks – but they still pushed through to rescue and save lives.
