Leather is Tougher.
Boston Bend

The history of the Boston firefighter leather helmet dates back to the late 1800s when Boston became one of the first cities to introduce a standardized fire department. Prior to this, firefighters wore a variety of helmets made from materials such as metal, cork, and leather. However, it was the Boston Fire Department that revolutionized the design and functionality of the helmet by incorporating a leather shell and a brass eagle shield. This distinctive design set the Boston helmet apart from others and became a hallmark of the city’s fire department.
